Tonight's first segment on Countdown, Lawrence O'Donnell addresses whether or not President Obama lied when he, in an interview for today's Washington Post, said that he “didn’t campaign on the public option.”
Here, watch this video and then decide if Obama lied:
The fact he told that the Washington Post he never campaigned on the Public Option is ironic, since candidate Obama, in response to a questionnaire about his health care plan during the presidential campaign, happened to tell the Post, “My plan builds on and improves our current insurance system, which most Americans continue to rely upon, and creates a new public health plan for those currently without coverage.”
Now, if he had said that, he didn't campaign hard for the Senate to include the public option, then that would have been a truthful statement. Because, as soon as work on health care reform began, he refused to draw any line sin the sand on a policy that helped get him the Democratic nomination.
