By now, you must have heard how conservatives have been celebrating Chicago's losing bid for the 2012 Olympics -- as a major loss for President Obama?
Well, let's start with conservative's rooting for the bid to fail so as not to forget -- to not let them forget -- that they were more interested in partisan politics rather than the 300,000 jobs that would have been created (starting almost immediately after a winning announcement), and the over $22 billion that would have been generated for the local economy:
Led by Fox News, the conservative media have opened a new front from which to attack President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama's support of Chicago's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics: smearing the city as unfit to host the Olympic Games, often by citing individual instances of violence. For example, Sean Hannity, after citing a recent murder and an assault, asked whether Chicago is "a city where we want the Olympics," and Glenn Beck said, "Chicago is good at ... organized Mafi -- oops, did I say that out loud?"Now, let's see how these Neanderthals all responded to news of Chicago's (and America's) loss...
Here's RedState’s Erick Erickson (h/t TPM):
Here's Rush Limbaugh (h/t Media Matters):
"Hahahahaha," wrote Red State's Erick Erickson. "So Obama's pimped us to every two bit thug and dictator in the world, made promises to half the Olympic committee, and they did not even kiss him. So much for improving America's standing in the world, Barry O."
Limbaugh joins Beck in rejoicing over Chicago's lost Olympic bid: "The world has rejected Obama"Here's Glenn Beck (h/t Media Matters):
"The worst day of Obama's presidency, folks. The ego has landed. The world has rejected Obama....For those of you ... who are upset that I sound gleeful, I am. I don't deny it. I'm happy. Anything that gets in the way of Barack Obama accomplishing his domestic agenda is fine with me."
Beck rejoices with "sweet" news that Chicago lost Olympic bidHere's All American, Newt Gingrich, who tweeted:
"Please, please let me break this news to you. It's so sweet."
"President Obama fails to get the Olympics while unemployment goes to 9.8% Iran continues nuclear program. America needs focused leadership."Here's The Weekly Standard's John McCormack (h/t Think Progress):
"Somehow charm and oratory dont seem to work in foreign affirs but historians have warned that foreign policy is different than campaigning."
abruptly changed without any explanation.
Soon after news broke that the International Olympic Committee had rejected Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which President Obama had personally lobbied for, Weekly Standard blogger John McCormack published a celebratory post on the magazine’s blog, titled “Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!.” McCormack wrote that “Cheers erupt at WEEKLY STANDARD world headquarters”:
Here's The Drudge Report, who announced the news like so:
h/t Think Progress):
Conservatives are currently gathered in Virginia for the American for Prosperity’s Defending the American Dream Summit, which features speakers such as radio host Hugh Hewitt and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Today when the IOC announced that the United States was eliminated from the running to host the 2016 Olympics, a room of conference attendees immediately laughed and applauded.Well, Rachel Maddow eviscerates these so-called "Americans" in a piece on last night's show that will make you proud to be a real American:
Conservatives celebrate America's loss
Oct. 2: Rachel Maddow is joined by Rep. Danny Davis, D-IL to try to make some sense of conservatives celebrating the news that the International Olympic Committee decided the summer Olympic games won't be held in Chicago in 2016.
Here's MSNBC's Joe Scarborough (who I usually take jabs at so I must give him kudos for this):
Thank You, Mr. President
Count me as one conservative who is disappointed that President Obama's hometown will not be hosting the 2016 Olympic Games.
We Republicans spent eight years trying to delegitimize Bill Clinton.
Democrats spent the next eight years doing the same to George W. Bush.
Now that a Democrat is in the Oval Office again, it is the GOP who is trying to delegitimize a sitting president.
I'm happy for Rio and think it is past time that South America got a chance to host the Olympic Games. But put me down as one conservative who is glad my president flew across the ocean to try to bring the 2016 Games to America.
Nice try, President Obama. And thanks for taking time away from your young girls for the sake of your hometown and your country, Michelle. I know that's never an easy thing to do.
President George W. Bush said this of Chicago's 2016 Bid (h/t Steve Bennan):
It was barely noticed at the time, but in January 2008, then-President George W. Bush met with the Chicago 2016 Bid Committee and U.S. Olympic Committee members about bringing the 2016 summer games to the city. "They say that the Olympics will come to Chicago if we're fortunate enough to be selected, but really it's coming to America, and I can't think of a better city to represent the United States than Chicago," Bush said.Which is ironic, since it just might have been the Bush Administration’s tourist visa policy that may have cost America the 2016 Olympics !!
Here's a good question from DKos' autoegocrat from the comment thread:
Here's what these people have rooted against so far:
Bill Clinton freeing American journalists from North Korea
Marines rescuing Americans from Somali pirates
Rescuing American automobile manufacturers
Health care for all Americans
An American city hosting the Olympics
Can we call them anti-American yet?
