NYT Editorial: Assassination Humor? Fox Crosses a Line

The NY Times didn't think Fox's Liz Trotta joking about assassinating Barack Obama was funny either:

Hillary Clinton’s recent comments about the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy have gotten a lot of attention. A far more offensive assassination reference on Fox News has largely gone under the radar, since it happened over a slow Memorial Day weekend.

Liz Trotta, a journalist and Fox contributor, was talking on Sunday about Mrs. Clinton’s comments, and misspoke, calling Barack Obama “Osama.” She then said, “And now we have what some are reading as a suggestion that somebody knock off Osama, uh, Obama. Well, both if we could.” Then she laughed.

Ms. Trotta has since apologized, but the apology rang hollow. We still do not understand why she thought talking about assassinating Mr. Obama was appropriate for television — or why she laughed after saying it.

Fox has never met its self-proclaimed standard of being “Fair and Balanced.” But is it too much to ask that it limit its political contributors to people who do not think that killing a presidential candidate is a laughing matter?
